Are you a Builder?

When I was young, I attended Sunday School at Cebu Bethel Temple which was my family’s home church then.  One of the songs that we used to sing in class was “Building Up the Temple.”  The words of the song go like these:

“Building up the temple,
Building up the temple.
Building up the temple of the Lord.
Brother, won’t you help me?
Sister, won’t you help me?
Building up the temple of the Lord.”

The song talks about building the temple of the Lord and there are two ways to interpret the word “temple”: a church or an individual Christian.  But for this writing, I would lean more towards the temple as the church.

So the song is a call to build the temple or church of the Lord and it is asking a brother and a sister to help.  There is some truth here.  A church can never be built by one person alone.  Others are needed to help in the building.  In fact, everybody is needed in the building of the church.

The Lord God has given us different gifts to be used in the building of His church.  Paul says in Ephesians 4:7, “But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it” (NIV).  Here is speaking about the different gifts.  The word “grace” and the word “gift” share the same root word in Greek which is charis.  And then he says in Romans 12:7-8, “If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach;  (8)  if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully” (NIV).  So whatever gifts that God has should be used as a building block in the raising and strengthening of God’s temple.

So what are the gifts that God has given you?  Are you using them for the building up of His church?  Are you a builder?
