A disciple is a student, a pupil or a follower. So when you say that you are a disciple of Christ, it
means that you are a student, a pupil or a follower of Christ.

I noticed that there are two types of music training: conservatory of music and regular music
schools. In music conservatory schools like UP Conservatory of Music or Silliman Conservatory of Music,
you are admitted if you have shown some level of competency in playing an instrument or singing.
Before you can enrol, you go to an audition. The task of the conservatory is to polish the talent that you
already have. On the other hand, you have the regular music schools like Yamaha School of Music or
Salonga School of Rock. They teach the basics of music, the playing of instrument or singing. When you
enrol in these schools, the assumption of the teachers is that you don’t know anything. So the teachers
there are patient and very helpful.

Sometimes, we think that to be a disciple you need to have reached certain level of spirituality,
knowledge of the Bible, etc. This is like a conservatory of music approach to discipleship. But
discipleship is like a regular music school where we start with the basics.
When he called them, Jesus had a lot of work to do in the disciples’ lives. They were ordinary
people. Simon Peter, Andrew, James and John were fishermen. Matthew was a tax collector. Among
the 12, only Bartholomew is the only one believed to have born rich. Then Jesus had to deal with their
rough edges. He had to deal with Peter’s compulsiveness, Simon’s revolutionary ideas (being a Zealot),
Philip’s hesitation to believe him and Thomas’s doubt. But Jesus Christ took them all in as his disciples.
He taught them and molded them.

To be his disciple, you must come to Jesus as you are. You don’t have to worry about your level
of spirituality and Bible knowledge. All of you have to do is to put your faith in him. When he says
“Follow me,” follow him. This takes faith, humility and obedience but these are the things needed to be
a follower of Christ.
