A child by choice

Sometime ago, I read a story from the Reader’s Digest about a girl who discovered that she was adopted. She was angry at her parents for not letting her know about this. When she returned home, she did not speak to her mother. Her mother was concerned of her silence. Eventually, the mother approached her and asked her why she silent. She did not answer but sometime later, she told her mother that she already knew that she was adopted and that she was angry at her and her father for not letting her know about it. The mother was quiet for a few minutes and then said that she was sorry for not telling her earlier because she was afraid of how she would react. Then she told her daughter that although she was not their biological child she was very special to them. “You may not be our child by biological means,” the mother explained, “but you are our child by choice. We chose you.”
The story reminds of who we are before God the Father. Yes, we are children of God in the sense that Jesus Christ is but the Heavenly Father adopted us into His family. He chose us to be His children. Ephesians 1:4-5 says, “Long ago, even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes. His unchanging plan has always been to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. And this gave him great pleasure” (NLT). It is through accepting the Lord Jesus Christ that we become children of God (Joh 1:12). Through him, we became holy and blameless because of his death on the cross. Adopting us gave pleasure to God the Father. As a result of His pleasure, we are made His heirs. Romans 8:17 explains, “Now if we are children, then we are heirs--heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ” (NIV).
Remember that God has chosen us to be His children.
