Every Thing Comes From God

Last Thursday, Sept. 8, 2016, I had my devotion.  I was really blessed by Our Daily Bread’s devotion for that day.  It was titled “Every Thing Comes from God.”  The scripture for that devotion was taken from David’s prayer in 1 Chronicles 29:14–19.  In this prayer, David recognized the all that we have comes from God.  He said in 1 Chronicles 29:16, “All of it belongs to you.”  In recognizing that everything comes from God, he felt humbled and wanted to offer back what he has given.  He said, “Everything we have has come from you, and we give you only what you first gave us” (1 Chr. 29:14).

God is the Maker of everything that we have.  Anything that we have and anything that our hand produces are from God.  It is humbling to say that we really have nothing.  But our recognition and humility should lead us to gratefulness expressed in giving back to Him what we have received from Him.  The devotion quoted words by Elisabeth Elliot from her book Passion and Purity that read: “If we hold tightly to anything given to us, unwilling to let it go when the time comes to let it go or unwilling to allow it to be used as the Giver means it to be used, we stunt the growth of the soul. It is easy to make a mistake here, ‘If God gave it to me,’ we say, ‘it’s mine. I can do what I want with it.’ No. The truth is that it is ours to thank Him for and ours to offer back to Him, . . . ours to let go of.”

We should give to God because He gave everything that we have.  Giving to Him is for our benefit.
